Javier "Hooks" Caldera is a reformed pirate captain that Leo Bonaparte, father of the current admiral, pardoned after punishing him for piracy by cutting off both of his hands. They were replaced by two hooks, earning him his nickname. He got a position in Fort Bonaparte and worked his way back as a captain of his own ship. However, he remained a crude and arrogant man who looked down upon other races.

He even orchestrated the bombing on the construction site of the new house for the Baker's Guild, which cost the lives of many dwarven builders as well as Ambassador Shanxian Ji Pei - the architect of the building - losing her legs. When her son Jun Ji Pei found out Hooks was behind his mother's injury, he marched to the Merry Mermaid to punish the captain by cutting off his legs as well. However, heroes of Heroica stopped Jun, convincing him to give the captain to the Bonapartes instead. Their punishment was much less severe, only demoting Hooks once again.
